At TEDxToronto Tom Rand discusses the success story of “Planet Traveler,” North America’s greenest hotel which shows how to cut 75% of carbon emissions by a building. Buildings must have everything they need already invented, be sustainable, profitable, and pay for themselves. The hotel’s heating and cooling systems are run on geothermal energy and saves energy by using heat from drain water before it hits the sewer. Rand argues that building retrofits could cut global emissions by a third and create local jobs, which should be mandated by governments and backed by commercial banks providing low-interest lending rates.
